Christmas 2023 is just around the corner and we would also like to thank our partners and customers for the trust they have placed in us and the good cooperation during this festive time. Once again this year, instead of giving Christmas presents, we have decided to support an organization that is tackling one of the biggest environmental problems – plastic waste in our oceans.
As of today, there are already more than 150 million tons of plastic waste in the world’s oceans. More than one million seabirds and other marine creatures die every year because of plastic waste, mistaking it for food, getting entangled or strangled. Plastic waste will not simply disappear, but will eventually turn into microplastics in the form of very small particles. This microplastic also enters our food chain via fish, for example. It is therefore very dangerous for all living creatures and there is a need for action. OEOO (One Earth – One Ocean e.V.) is a German organization that has developed a concept for “maritime waste disposal” to rid the world’s waters of plastic waste. It collects plastic in coastal and estuary areas with special waste collection ships, sorts it and prepares it according to type. The plastic waste is then recycled on a waste recycling ship. This allows the plastic waste to be removed from nature before it breaks down into microplastics. The end product of the recycling process is heating oil, unmixed plastic bales and energy through thermal processing. The organization has already received several prizes and awards for this concept in the past and has been using it successfully in the waters for over 10 years.
At 4SquareReturn, we ran an internal fundraising campaign as part of our sports club and collected money to support the OEOO organization. Every TechProtect and 1cc employee was able to participate by tracking their sporting activities such as walking, running or cycling for the campaign. We are pleased to be able to make a contribution to cleaning the world’s oceans and inland waters of plastic waste, oil and chemicals with this donation.
